My Great-Grandfather enlisted November 9, 1861 at Koscinsko, Indiana for three years, until December 31, 1863. On January 1, 1864 he re-enlisted in the Indiana Infantry and he served under Captain William H. Miller and participated in the March to Ripley. After the war he discharged in Louisville, Kentucky, July 15, 1865 and was a farmer in Saint joseph's County, Indiana.

Van Buren Hinds - Private
Van Buren Hinds, Co K, 48th Indiana had previously served in the 20th Indiana and was captured aboard the ship 'Fanny' in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina 1 October 1861. After serving as a prisoner of war at Libbey Prison, he was exchanged in May of 1862. He then joined the 54th Indiana and served in the western campaign including the siege of Vicksburg. His enlistment expired on 30 June 1863 and he went back to Indiana. He and a brother, Wesley joined the 48th after another brother, Roark returned from the 26th Indiana wounded in the spring of 1864. They both served through Sherman's March and were at the surrender at Bennet's Farm House when the war ended.
